Leaders often invest in team building on faith, hoping it “helps morale.” But if you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it. Here’s how to know whether your efforts are actually working.
The Four Dimensions to Track
1. Connection
Do people feel closer to their teammates? Pulse question: “I have a strong relationship with at least one person on my team.” (1–5)
2. Psychological Safety
Do people feel safe to speak up? Pulse question: “I can admit a mistake on this team without fear of blame.”
3. Engagement
Are people energized by their work? Track participation rates and voluntary contribution.
4. Retention & Performance
The lagging indicators: turnover rate, eNPS, and delivery velocity.
Avoid the Vanity Metrics
Attendance and “fun ratings” feel good but don’t prove impact. Focus on outcomes — connection, safety, retention — not activity counts.
Close the Loop
The most important step: share the results and act on them. Measurement without action erodes trust; measurement with follow-through builds it.
Takeaway: What gets measured gets improved. Track connection and safety, act on what you learn, and let the data guide your next move.
